The USA fake psychic detective buddy comedy Psych returns for its second season this Friday. The show stars James Roday as Shawn Spencer, the intuitive son of a former cop who uses his abilities to help the police by pretending to be a psychic. In his comic quests to solve crime, Shawn is aided by his childhood friend Gus (Dule Hill from The West Wing), a worrisome pharmaceuticals salesman.
Earlier today, Roday and Hill held a conference call in which they discussed episodes from the upcoming season, the evolution of their chemistry, and the possibility of reuniting Hill with some of his West Wing co-stars. Some of the highlights included:
-The season premiere, co-written by Roday, is one of the wildest episodes they've done, and Roday promised a "bigger, better, faster" Psych. The episode features Tim Curry, Gina Gershon, and Hill sporting a jeri curl.
-Other future episodes the stars are excited about center around horse racing and the cultural phenomenon of pimping your ride. Another episode features a very stodgy federal agent played by Lou Diamond Phillips, who they compared to one of the show's characters, the by-the-book Detective Lassiter (Tim Omundson).
-Roday was very excited by another guest actor, John Amos. The star of Roots and Good Times, Amos also had a recurring role on The West Wing as the head of the joint chiefs. This raised the idea that perhaps other West Wing alums would visit the show as well, and Dule Hill ran off his top three choices. First and foremost, Martin Sheen, who Hill would love to work with again in a different atmosphere. Second is Richard Schiff, who played the glum communications director, who Hill claims is actually very funny. Third is Joshua Malina, who not only served as Hill's co-star, but also created Celebrity Poker Showdown, which Hill won twice.
-The two were also asked about their popular "Psych Out" moments, the teasers at the end of the episodes that typically feature an improvised karaoke performance by the two of a hit '80s song. They started by virtue of Roday and Hill's mutual love of '80s music, and in the second season, they'll try to add some more flavor to the "Psych Outs" by varying them, possibly with humorous public service announcements.
